• Mix 10 wheelbarrows sand with one 25kg bag of builders' lime (mix well, at least one day beforehand, preferably three days)
• Then mix the water with one more 25kg bag builders' lime, and one spade cement
The thinner the mix, the better, and the rougher the wall surface, the stronger will be the bond in time
Plaster Mix
(obtained from SAHRA)
• 5 parts clean river sand
• 20kg unslaked lime*
• half part cement
Mix well and leave for 24 hours. Add water
WHITE WASH
Traditional White Wash
(obtained from Reggie September, in charge of maintenance at Meerlust)
• 60 litres water
• 20kg unslaked lime*
• 750ml raw linseed oil (this replaces the previously used, but now difficult to find, tallow†)
LIME-WASH
(obtained from SAHRA)
• 50kg unslaked lime*
• 6kg coarse salt
• 4kg fat or candle wax (1 bottle linseed oil may be used instead)
• 150 litre water
Leave for 24 hours, stirring occasionally
* unslaked lime: lime cut into blocks, packed into a lime-kiln, then burnt to convert to unslaked lime
† tallow: softened animal fat
